Grew up in Hawai’i and there’s a word in Hawaiian that I miss being able to use freely. Kuleana means your area of expertise, responsibility, and influence. My family is my kuleana, so is my home and my appearance and my attitude. It can be used positively and negatively. “Your kuleana pono (pono is good)?” Or “Eh, that’s not my kuleana.” It’s more than responsibility, it’s more than privilege. It’s a great word and I miss it.
