Intelligence usually becomes more specialized/narrow as you go up in IQ, savants & genius tend to be savants & genius’s in 1-2 specific areas, and are mediocre to incompetent in most everything else. Lots of folks are commenting on the different types of intelligence and that’s definitely a part of it. But one thing that I’ve noticed having gone through the honors classes is that sometimes I feel like I did everything out of order? School always came super easy for me, I didn’t have to work at it, so I was put in the gifted classes. But I think the idea is that because you’re gifted in one area and you can hold a conversation with adults you’re more mature so they assume you know things like time management, social skills, and generally how to be a human being beyond your years, but that’s not always the case. I did really well in school but as an adult I’ve often found that I have to learn or relearn things that feel really basic. I’m not complaining, I enjoyed being in school and I had a great childhood, but there’s a lot of things I wish I had learned that I just didn’t.

Executive dysfunction is a thing. I have a friend who was well on their way to being an accomplished musician (violin), had to leave that dream behind due to neck injury, and pivoted into medicine. Master’s, residency, all that jazz. Extremely smart person. Meanwhile, I played trumpet for fun in highschool – no aspirations of going pro or anything – and stopped education after my BA because I didn’t want to go into debt for more. (I had a scholarship for my BA.)
