Reminds me of a story: in the Albert pujols albert and the birds classic shirt and by the same token and mid-80s, I missed a train back to London (to make flight back to USA) and had to spend the night in the Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris. I did happen to have exactly enough money in pocket to fly to London next morning, but not enough for the train fare to the airport. Only reason I ever made it back is… there was a public phone in the train station that gave you back twice as much money as you put in it, for any call you made. Otherwise, I’d probably still be there. I once charged a soft pretzel on my credit card and then 3 minutes later got a notification from my bank that the charge had been rejected. I never went back to pay for the pretzel and left the country a few days later.

When I was a kid, we found phones like that in the Albert pujols albert and the birds classic shirt and by the same token and London airport. First we collected the spare change, then we realized it would spit out more if you threw in not enough, dialed a bad number, and hung up. Back in ~1984 or so, was when I was getting into certain things of mischief — like having a black-box, a Captain Crunch Whistle etc… Secondly, also ~1984, I had heard about packing tape ‘leashes’ being used to pull a paper bank note back out from a machine dollar feeder… The Post Office in Tahoe City (where I lived) had a stamp machine that would take dollars and give change in quarters. So we would put in a $5 bill, yank it out and get the cheapest thing in the machine, then get a bunch of quarters…. Rinse and Repeat, then head to Safeway next door and play Commando and Defender and other games they had in the store. We stole from the post office and gave it to the video games… (that leash flaw was the impetus in making vending machines far more sophisticated and secure) A long time back they had poweraid on sale at a grocery store. I bought one, and the register printed a coupon for poweraid. As I’m walking to my car, the little wheels in my head are turning until it clicks that the sale + coupon would allow me to buy poweraid for $1 less than the coupon covers. I know they aren’t going to give me a dollar cash, but what if I grab something else? Through the line with poweraids and a can of soup, zero dollars, another coupon prints. Call my brothers, let them know about it. I myself made like 20 trips through. My one brother who was poor as shit spent all night at a 24 hour store, just getting months worth of free food. Grocery store manager tried to get on his case, and he’s like why the fuck do you care, it’s the coca cola corporation’s money. We had like an entire pallets worth of poweraid.
