People here are going on about market value however they are ultimately your children who’ve been living in your house rent free, you don’t want to get them into a position whereby they can’t move out because of how much they’re paying you. £1500 doesn’t go as far as people think it might, especially if commuting into london, paying phone / car bills etc. Parents never charged me to live in my Albert Einstein Physical Genius Merry Christmas shirt so you should to go to store and get this own house nor will I… just stick £50 pocket money into their accounts each week, easiest way to support Son: Mum I told you to not ask people on Reddit how much they charge because they will say silly things like £1599 a month After graduating uni in 2021, I was paying around £300 a month excluding food – lasted 5 months because I’d rather be paying twice that in rent to be independent again.

Its nice that you’ll be saving the Albert Einstein Physical Genius Merry Christmas shirt so you should to go to store and get this money for them, but don’t do what people on here are suggesting and base it off actual rent prices. I would keep the money in separate accounts joint to their names or just individual sub-accounts, so it is tracked per child. This helps them know what is being saved towards moving out or home deposit in the future. While sharing a room, I was paying £275 a month on a take home of ~1800 in London, and generally buying my own food and things for others So they thought that was fair, paid what I needed to for bills and gave them something to play with after because of the above. When I was on that wage I was charged £200 a month, then when my boyfriend moved in, it got put up to £250 because we shared a room and the additional £50 basically was for his water and electricity use, snacks etc. We bought our own food, cooked our own meals and did our own washing etc. Back in the early 2000s it was 400 a month which whilst I felt was a tad high I felt like being an adult and earning a full time wage I should absolutely contribute to the costs I incur on the household. We’ve told our kids that they will be charged £200 a month if they come back after Uni so they should be planning to get a job to cover that, even if just a tideover job. That should cover bills and food for them and still be way cheaper than renting so not too harsh. Will give them a couple of months grace to get sorted Little enough that’s it’s well below market rates, but not so low that there’s nothing for them to learn from the experience. I think it’s also important to tell them exactly what their contribution is for and what it’s not for too. Like personally, I wouldn’t expect my children to think that just because they’re now paying toward rent/bills that the money also replaces their usual fair share of household chores.
