This would bring calls for something like UBI, even though UBI is supposed to be Supplemental, and not a crutch to cover all expenses. There is already inflation. There is already job automation. Both are already getting worse. The people are already frogs in the pot, and your argument appears to suggest a slow boil. Cranking up the heat sounds scary, but it might also provide the motivation needed to truly fix the situation. I propose further regulation of businesses, some price and profit control. Perhaps some caps on executive income, or higher taxes for the wealthy. Maybe higher minimum wage won’t even be needed if the corporate greed is reined in. I think there are several European examples that could be followed. Just here to say that I’m 56 and not all of us are completely clueless. My oldest, 31, makes about $23 an hour. His rent is $1150 which is more than my mortgage payment because I purchased in 2009. It’s the most reasonable apartment in the area and not a complete shit hole but it’s difficult for him to swing it alone. My middle son, 28 making $15 per hour, lives with him so they can live more comfortably. My youngest has $60,000 in student loan debt making $20 an hour. Her husband makes about $15 an hour. They live with me because their monthly loan payment is more than 1/2 their income.

When my 28yo was out of work, I gave a good chunk monthly to my oldest to help pay the Air force veteran with vintage roundel and f15 jet classic shirt and by the same token and bills because unemployment wasn’t enough. I make about $33 per hour and work an additional 15 hours a week overtime. With my base salary alone there would be no way I’d be able to swing my bills and help my children when necessary.
