This is a perfect example of that narrative of a guy seeing an ad for guitar lessons, and getting livid because he doesn’t want guitar lessons. The machine doesn’t know or care that you’re using a coupon on potatoes. Be pretty weird for them to not get any benefit out of besides just PR when the tax code literally gives tax breaks for food donations, clothing donations etc as well as monetary donations so it’s very weird that a business/restaurant can get a tax break from donating food but doesn’t when donating money?!?!?!? If that’s true then they would get better PR and tax breaks from donating food. They pretty universally take a cut from the charity as a fee for allowing them to operate there. Don’t kid yourself. The “PR” of a ten second question on a checkout screen isn’t buying shit. But that million dollar check they get in kickbacks for allowing the charity to use their payment processing? Tada, easy money.

Every red cent thy take in = one red cent of income. When they later donate it, it offsets the collection (which appears as income) resulting in a net 0. They get nothing but the PR. Is it really astounding?? Like the older I get the more I realize the average person is dumb as hell and has very little interest in changing that. They don’t even collect interest on it, donations are kept in a separate account that doesn’t collect interest and the money never even counts as income on their books. I feel the same way when government spends trillions on war, mass surveillance, corporate bailouts, bank bailouts, mass incarceration, police militarization, torture, etc. and then says people just aren’t paying their “fair share” while the “public servants” become millionaires while “serving” in office. Not gonna lie I always donate to the Ronald McDonald Charity House if it prompts me. I’ve known people who were sick with cancer and the RMCH helped them out a ton with housing for the family and a bunch of other stuff. Seriously this has been pissing me off lately with the Ukraine war. Soo many companies on their websites say “please donate to support Ukraine”
