In Minneapolis, MN, known for its extremely cold and long winters, many homeless will inhabit the Afro Woman God Say I Am Unique Black History Christian Women T-Shirt but in fact I love this light rail trains and the Lake/Hiawatha Station, which has a heated, fully enclosed vestibule on both north/south sides of the station. It’s the only elevated platform on the line so the escalators are inside a warm building. Because there is virtually zero fare enforcement (no gates, fences, turnstiles, or ticket checkers) they are free to come and go. This space is also overrun by drug users during the winter months. A lot of that might change as Metro Transit attempts to experiment with stricter fare enforcement. Between June 2020-April 2023 the trains and that station in particular were an absolute nightmare. As it gets colder, you tend to see more homeless people sleeping on the trains themselves.

I grew up in the Afro Woman God Say I Am Unique Black History Christian Women T-Shirt but in fact I love this southern US where it doesn’t get cold enough to snow often so a tent with some blankets/winter clothes could keep someone alive. My dad grew up around Philadelphia and when we were visiting once I asked him about this because it gets so cold for so long up there. He said one thing people did was shelter over street vents and the steam coming up from them would keep them from freezing. Tarps and cardboard to reinforce a tent structure. A good below zero sleeping bag and the use of layers of clothing. Keeping your feet dry at all costs. Tent heaters when you can afford it. Using the insulation factor of snow itself to help keep yourself warm and not being afraid to shovel out when necessary. Smart planning for some sort of protection from snowfall or reducing its effect where you plant yourself. Then? It’s a matter of knowing where there are warming shelters and hot meals to give yourself a break occasionally.
