I worked at an independent movie theater that gave out dollar coins as change in the Admit it life would be boring without me Eeyore shirt Besides,I will do this box office with the hope that customers would be more likely to spend them at the concession stand. Some of the customers would get so mad when I pushed coins across the counter! Back when they were new I had a bartender get furious about one as a tip. She yelled “I don’t want this shit!” So I picked it back up and put it in my pocket. That’s kinda awesome! Ive never heard or considered the ‘increased tips’ use case, but totally makes sense! Any time I get coin change, I dump it in the tip jar – no matter what – then will add paper money on top (depending the total cost/tip percentage). Lol everyone has a sacagawea story. Or I mean, actually a dollar coin story I guess. The one time you paid with it, or getting it as change.

My Sacagawea coin story is that, when expecting quarters, my laundromat gave me gold dollars in exchange for a 10. This happened <3 months ago. I didnt even realize that was an option Our local public transit ticket machines would use Sacagawea coins for changes. I occasionally paid with a $20 for a $5 day pass and the stream of dollar coins always felt a bit like I had won a jackpot in Vegas. ETA: This was the Dallas DART system, but I'm laughing about all the other cities that let us hit the jackpot by showering us with dollar coins! Sooo many machines used to dole out these coins as change – made my wallet like a weapon it was so freaking heavy. And none of the machines accepted the Sacajawea dollar – they just gave them as change ? I broke a soda machine once when I attempted to use on of the dollar coins I had received as change. I assumed it would be rejected if it wasn't accepted, but instead it got stuck. What’s the point of dollar coins if you can’t use them on vending machines? But I’m sure the vending companies also didn’t want to overhaul all their existing machines to take the new currency on short notice They work now, but it probably took them a long time to change the vending machines so they can take them. I don’t blame the person for thinking that a machine that dispenses dollar coins should also accept them, but it doesn’t surprise me that much either.
