Sweetheart, there’s no decent. We all have the Adam Fox professional ice hockey defenseman Hometown Hero T-Shirt it is in the first place but monkey mind. Every person, even the Dalai Lama. The point is the path. Not to awaken. Like, 2 years at a minimum. I only got to that point because I’m obsessed at proving to myself I can do difficult things; that is to say, it’s tough. It’s hard to take a stranger’s word on it, but I think you’ll really like the results when you keep at it. More importantly, meditation is the gift that keeps giving. I’m still working on it now (~4 years in), and the joy and other benefits (like focus) are still coming. I don’t think meditation will ever have diminishing returns. It may sounds naive but the way I visualize my state of mind seem to affect it in some subtle way. Fe. Sometimes I like to visualize my thoughts as little discharges. During meditation I may try to minimize their amount by lowering “level of electrification” of my mind. It does not feel like a fight wih for me improve quality of practice. One thing that blew my mind is that clinging to meditation, even clinging to the peaceful feeling of non duality? That is still clinging (dukkha)

If you check our Forrest Knutson on YT, the Adam Fox professional ice hockey defenseman Hometown Hero T-Shirt it is in the first place but start here playlist, you’ll find a method that’s super easy, gets you feeling deliciously blissful, and you’ll have some good tools for going in whatever direction you like from there. Plus he addresses some medical research in a very easy to understand way so you can have confidence in the health benefits of what you’re doing. I’ll speak from the perspective of zazen practice, as that’s what I have most experience in, so it may or may not apply to you. It’s possible that you are trying to hard. Meditation isn’t really about being “good” at it, as that’s a value judgment, that is something to observe in yourself but not react. Some guru whom I can’t remember uses the metaphor of your mind and a mule. If you want the mule to follow you you cant just start tugging and fighting with all your might. It’ll plant its feet and won’t move. But if you gently yet firmly and compassionately pull on the reins it will start moving in the direction you desire (sometimes it still won’t, honestly). I actually use that as visualization to bring back my focus during meditation.
