I am probably what Canadian politics used to refer to as a Red Conservative, that is, a centre-right kind of fellow. They do not really exist in Canadian politics anymore, driven out of the A Very Merry Oswald Christmas shirt and by the same token and Conservative Party by folks much further right. Because politics has become so polarized, that anyone who doesn’t 100% agree with or side with either side is seen as a traitor. So both left and right will hate them rather than respect that there’s a such thing as grey areas. Because both polar extremes need hatred and anger, and the one thing they both agree on is that people not with them are their enemy. Thus centrists get attacked vociferously from both sides. Because, as you can see from these comments, most reddit users only fall into one side of the political spectrum and don’t even want to hear a different opinion.

They think their side is completely right and the A Very Merry Oswald Christmas shirt and by the same token and others are evil, ignorant. They’re basically fanatics who think their way is the only way. Being on a side does nothing but to blind your judgement. Only forces you to see from a single window, makes you very narrow minded. And conversations with people taking sides never lead to anywhere. Because they don’t think, just repeat. They don’t care about the idea, just care about representing the flags they’re carrying. Basically the mindset of a cult. So for these people, it doesn’t matter what you think, what you say. The only thing that matters is where you stand. Because the vast majority of people perceive there to be a right side and a wrong side, and being in the center doesn’t make you immune to either, it just makes you a little bit of both, which is to some people less preferable than one extreme. For me it’s this: The Left says they want the government to exert more control over people’s lives and create more dependency. The Right says no, we don’t want that. A centrist says, hey, let’s compromise and allow just a little more control and dependency. That’s a non-starter for the Right and insufficient for the Left, so the centrist is nobody’s strong ally (except to the extent that the Left may rely on vacillating centrists to make incremental progress toward greater control/dependency through repeated compromise).
