The US has fewer restrictions on its media (read: news) that ensure what’s published is as unbiased and factual as possible when compared to other nations of a similar HDI. The result is news that comes across as more sensationalist. Constant dangers are being talked about nonstop in order to drive engagement. The result is that the average American feels less safe than, say, the average German or average Canadian, or average New Zealander.
