Laptop is just for typing (emails, source code) and video conferencing. Nice keyboard and monitor are what matter more. (Those were already taken away though). They aren’t. Google engineers aren’t allowed to have code on their laptop at all. It’s just a web browser host. I work at an IT company and everyone has the same hardware options as developers, its super unnecessary. Why would it be slow? This is literally the model most big tech companies use, many Google employees can even get by using chromebooks. Most IDEs will have a ssh functionality to make it almost seamless, you aren’t interacting through teamviewer etc you are using your local vscode/jetbrains ide and being served the remote terminal/files It is. The IDE isn’t doing anything super intensive that needs the processing power, it’s basically just scanning and parsing text locally and doing everything else on the server. Is it?? Remote VMs have come a long way but they’re MILES away from local processing. I’ve seen it at banks and some high security government departments but I really don’t think it’s all that common. At least not in technology. We’d riot. If your local machine grinds to a halt when you have chrome and pycharm open at the same time, you’ve got a problem

Dude, no. We have mobile CPUS with more power than you can even comprehend. Not to mention a local SSD will always be faster than a remote one. I understand they can have fast servers, but in my experience they are not usually high speed. Along with not everyone has high speed internet to have a constant high quality no lag video feed from a remote location. Or are you gonna tell me you can get i9-13900K with PCIE SSD performance for all the users of a company server? You don’t know what you’re talking about, it’s obvious. You don’t know how development works at most large tech companies.
