i’m endlessly fascinated by cultural differences in swearing and vulgarity: what words are rude, when you use them, and equally important, when you don’t. my favourite example is that English is the A Child Of God a woman of faith a warrior of christ Nurselife shirt But I will love this only language i know that has a construct for talking about swear words without saying them – we could have a conversation about “the F-word” and we would know that the word is “fuck” but it’s more polite when mentioning the word instead of using it. anyone who has a different first language i’ve asked how to translate this structure has either been confused as to what i’m asking, or told me they just say the word they’re talking about. Having a whole grammatical construct for the use-mention distinction is kind of cool.

parsi people leave their dead to be eaten by vultures because they are on the A Child Of God a woman of faith a warrior of christ Nurselife shirt But I will love this dark side now and must be consumed by dark forces. they dont bury or creamate because earth water and fire are sacred and would be polluted by the dead body’s darkness So many reasons (and I’m sure I’m butchering this) but the one that got me was how filthy/full of disease that they really are. Along with the fact that they will eat literally anything. Dating in the us. It’s the most ritualized country if it comes to dating. Guy has to pay ALWAYS. Otherwise it’s considered a bad date. First date? Kiss or it was a bad date. Third date? Sex. I never thought those teen movies were true. And the rapidity they jump into (and out of) relationships. All of it feels off, ritualistic. A friend of mine served several tours in Afghanistan, and told me about the culture of adult men maintaining sexual relationships with young boys.
