Lab techs, we do so much work for doctors to get to the results and never get any recognition for it. Drawing blood, performing quality controls, run stats and bring blood when there is a big trauma. Got my bachelor’s in chemistry but quickly started as a chemical engineer because lab work sucks and the pay is shit lol Gonna toss my hat in the ring for research lab techs as well. Well educated (never met a tech with less than a bachelor’s) in a job that requires a highly technical skill set. Also throwing my hat in here. In my lab I do all of the recording, analysis, and draft the report, doctor just signs it. I’m one of 2 individuals in the state who can perform and analyze this exam. Yet everyone still treats us like shit and I have to hear doctors I work for complain about their bonuses which are more than I make in a year. Therapists. They need 6+ years of school (Masters or PhD/PsyD) and usually get paid around $50k (that’s on the higher end) a year while having 100k+ in student loans. Somebody’s going to point to high-profile, well-connected therapists in LA or New York who charge $350 an hour. That’s like saying, “Musicians aren’t underpaid. Ed Sheeran made 70 million pounds last year.”. I spent 9 years in school (6 years to be able to treat patients, 3 years specialization) and get paid on par with a 3 year teaching degree. The teachers are currently in the process of protesting for higher wages which would make them earn more than me. I’m not bitter and like my profession but looking at my friends earning double the money I bring in and doing so from a younger age does make me question my career path.

This is a little misleading, since the 50 Years 1972 2022 The Godfather Thank You For THe Memories Shirt and by the same token and term “therapist” (psychotherapist) can refer to clinicians who are in a wide range of professional situations. Some of those people are grossly underpaid, while others are extremely well compensated. The first thing to consider is that therapists can come from a variety of training backgrounds. That can range anywhere from a licensed mental health counselor who did a 1 year master’s degree + 1 year internship to a psychologist who did an 6 year PhD + 1 year internship + 2 year postdoctoral fellowship. Employers will typically vary their rate of pay based on educational background, so there’s a lot of variation for that reason alone.
