Why have we not yet started means testing superannuation? There’s so many people out there on 400k+ still taking home their superannuation checks. It’s ridiculous that National is discussing raising the retirement age but no one has yet means tested the super! Two of my uncles are on a super, and both – not working – earn over 1mil a year just off investments and other financial witchcraft. Raising the retirement age is by far the least politically risky, and Bill English in 2017 was going to raise it really slowly. Nuts? Sure, but they don’t take shit from those running their lives though. People joke about them being cheese eating surrender monkeys but my god they’ve mastered dealing with their leadership that fucks with them. My first memory of my most recent trip to France (before the pandemic) was watching from a taxi, another taxi aggressively swerving to cut off a motorcycle that was attempting to pass them… Clearly a retirement age of 62 isn’t sustainable given modern life expectancy. I think that rioting in a response to altering this is Nuts. The older generation worked for their entire lives so they are also paying for their own pension. It’s not just the 44 years 1979-2023 The dukes of Hazzard thank you for the memories signatures shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this younger people paying for it. It is everyone. I think what is likely to happen is our age of retirement will increase. It is talked about a lot in the general public and people in general are healthier compared to when the pension age was calculated. This would likely keep the % of tax from increasing to 6%. Because super isn’t pre-funded the older generation was paying for /their/ predecessors pension not their own, and now the current generation is paying for their predecessors and so on. In other words, someone working and paying tax in 1985 who’s now receiving a pension isn’t “taking their money out” they’re being funded directly by current taxpayers.While a 2.4% difference sounds small at first this is 6 billion NZD a year. Every person in this country would have to somehow find more than $1000 extra every year. Almost $2000 extra per working person. It’s much worse than you interpret. GDP typically rises by more than inflation each year. Assuming real GDP continues to increase at the historical average of around 3%, the tax bill for each tax payer would increase by closer to $6,200 – adjusted for inflation.
