I feel like people think the ice cream barge thing happened in a vacuum. Ice cream was a huge thing in the Navy at the time. Most big ships had multiple ice cream counters. The book “In Harms Way” – the story of the USS Indianapolis, goes into this a bit at some point. Iirc, the Indy had 2 ice cream stands. The killer was the ability to deliver ice cream to the marines on the beachhead. Sailors always had it good with fresh cooked meals, showers, toilets and beds (or hammocks depending on the vessel).
