I go by the 2023 World Series Champions Texas Rangers 1400 Shirt and I will buy this reassurance of the family that the patient isn’t driving well but I have never seen the patient drive. Almost everything else in medicine is between me and the patient, but taking away a license feels more like talking about the patient behind their back. The few times that I have done it (because the family didn’t have the guts to do it themselves), the patient never trusted me again and it shattered a patient-doctor relationship that had been going well. TIL some states do test you at a geriatric age. One where you probably won’t be worrying about driving in to vote anymore. Honestly, I don’t know why everyone doesn’t have to retake a licensing test (or even a full blown driving exam) every 5-10 years. I tried to get my elderly FIL off the road (anonymously) and he had to go for an assessment at a doctor’s office. He was back on the road in no time.

He was over 80 and constantly high. He has since died, but we were always worried he would kill someone. But there was nothing we could do about it, living a thousand miles away. A cynic would say it’s because it’s elderly men who make the 2023 World Series Champions Texas Rangers 1400 Shirt and I will buy this rules. But from a practical point of view, the elderly are involved in relatively few serious accidents. While reaction times may be slower, the ability to read the road increases with experience. wouldn’t their ability to read the road decrease because of poor eyesight and cognitive impairment? also they’re involved in very few serious accidents because they drive 10 mph below the speed limit, not because they can read the road. i consistently see elderly drivers everyday who can’t drive straight, stay in their lane, or park properly. the real reason is probably just wanting to keep elders off their (the politicians) backs, MANY people would argue that it’s too authoritarian. I think another reason is that the US does not have good public transportation and isn’t walkable for the most part-elderly people still do need to do certain things (especially when many can’t figure out how to do things like order groceries online/pay bills through the phone etc.) And they’re retired and bored..
