Pretty weird that their biggest hits, this song and Y.M.C.A sound like advertisements/jingles for organizations that didn’t ask them to write them. Like seriously, they wrote this song before the 10 Years 2011-2021 Little Mix Signature Thank You For The Memories Shirt in addition I really love this Navy even contacted them, and it sounds like it was explicitly written to be in an advertising campaign. Congratulations, you stoleAnother fun fact is that Victor Willis, who was the lead singer during the group’s heyday, is straight and has been known to be homophobic. “When I look at you, I no longer see students. I see seamen. From the moment you came onboard, I saw seamen inside of you. More importantly you’ve stopped laughing at the word “seamen” which is the mark of a true seaman.” 112 more repliesCome on, dude. Really? You’re just gonna say that in a sentence about the Village People, and we’re supposed to just pretend it isn’t there? The fact this happened but also had “don’t ask, don’t tell” is so bizzare and fucked up. They picked a band that was built to deliberately (and perhaps blithely?) use gay culture to be cool – and yet this was decades before you could be openly gay in the military? Ironic that at the time the Navy allowed the group to use military equipment in filming the video (as part of a recruitment campaign that was dropped), it was forbidden for members of a demographic closely associated with The Village People to join the military.

No, during that time being gay in the 10 Years 2011-2021 Little Mix Signature Thank You For The Memories Shirt in addition I really love this Navy was straight up illegal. I was in from 85 to 91, the captain of our ship had the NIS (now called the NCIS) infiltrate our ship undercover to root out the gays, flew them off the ship in helo with an announcement of “Pink Deck”, and had all of them dishonorably discharged. Not arguing… DADT was not a mantra but an official policy of the enlistment process. Source: was recruiter from 97 to 01. The Village People could’ve also opted filming in something long and hard and full of seamen as well……a Submarine we need to have a serious discussion about the words seamen , cement and semen . the English gods are setting me up for failure. TIL the YouTube link in the Wikipedia article to the actual music video gives a “video is not available” error. The military and police have always offered there shit for free publicity see literally all of MCU and damn near every single cop show ever made Kind of foolish considering our military spending. Did you know major sporting events get paid big money just for playing the National Anthem? They also waste tons of money on flying over stadiums etc. Even worse you’d be surprised to find out the Pentagon can’t account for $220Billion of military equipment.
